Origami Christmas Flower: Red Iris

Traditional Origami Christmas Flower: Red Iris

Complexity “intermediate” Time to fold 15 min. 12 steps.
Paper: Single Uncut square Red and white paper, about 30 cm x 30 cm. But you may use any kind of paper to fold this origami iris flower.
The origami iris (also called an origami lily) is a traditional design loved by many. The folding sequence is considered “intermediate” in difficulty. It is not a hard model to make, but there are quite a few steps to follow. Many of the steps are repeat-on-the-other-side types of fold. Because there are so many repeated folds, it can get confusing. The thing to remember with this origami iris is that there are 4 petals, so the folding sequences need to be done 4 times.
When made, they become ideal decorations and can be used for table centerpieces, gift packaging and craft work.

How to fold the Origami Christmas Flower: Red Iris
This video shows how to make a type of flower that looks like a lily. This model is not that difficult to make but it has many folding steps. You will have to go through total 48 steps to complete making an origami lily. It is based on so-called “balloon base”. So you will learn what this balloon base is and how it is related to the lily. The most important technique that you will learn from this origami lily is “squash fold” which will be applied repeatedly many times.

Iris2 150Iris Flower Symbolism iris flower symbolismThe flower symbolism associated with the iris is faith, wisdom, cherished friendship, hope, valor, my compliments, promise in love, wisdom. Irises were used in Mary Gardens. The blade-shaped foliage denotes the sorrows which ‘pierced her heart.’ The iris is the emblem of both France and Florence, Italy. The fleur-de-lis, one of the most well-known of all symbols, is derived from the shape of the iris flower. The fleur-de-lis is a symbol of the royal family in France and is the state flower of Tennessee.

This lily is not recommended as a first project. But if you are comfortable making a crane, go for it! It is a traditional paper folding design that is almost as popular as the origami crane. However, it is interesting to note that there are several different methods of creating an origami lily. The method used in this tutorial is my personal favorite and seems to be one of the more popular ways to fold a beautiful origami lily.

The origami lily is an intermediate level project best left to people who have previous paper folding experience. You may use any kind of paper to fold the origami lily. It is a little easier if the front and the back side of the paper are slightly different whether it be in texture or color. Make sure the paper that you use is a square (all sides are equal and all the angles equal 90 degrees). The paper I am using here is 15cm x 15cm square one. It is a good size for those who are not experienced in paper folding. If you are become familiar with this model. Then you can try smaller size paper.
